Endorsements:
CDL endorsements are essential for commercial drivers to operate particular types of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). Double/triple and tanker certification required
Qualifications:
- High School degree or equivalent preferred
- Must have the ability to read, write, speak English and perform simple mathematical calculations with general mental abilities to handle receipts, read maps, road signs, maintain logs, etc.
- Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license with doubles, triples, and tanker endorsements
- Must have 12 months previous tractor-trailer driving experience and/or be a recent graduate of an OD approved driving school, and/or have satisfactorily completed the Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program
- Military driving experience must be within the past 3 years, and a DD214 along with proof of MIC/MIS driving experience must be provided.
- Must be at least 21 years of age

Driving at Old Dominion
Old Dominion offers several CDL driving career paths, including Local Pickup & Delivery (P&D), Line Haul, Team Line Haul, and Combo Driver positions. Pickup & Delivery (P&D) drivers make local deliveries and pickups throughout the day, typically completing 15–20 customer stops. Home Time
Approximately 95% of Old Dominion drivers are home daily. While schedules vary by position and location, most Pickup & Delivery and many Line Haul drivers return home each day.
Local Pickup & Delivery positions are designed for drivers who want to work in their local community and typically return home every day. Many Line Haul positions also offer daily home time depending on the route.

CDL Training
Yes. Old Dominion offers a paid Truck Driver Training Program where eligible employees can earn their Class A CDL while receiving pay during approximately 280 hours of training.
Yes. Participants in the Old Dominion Truck Driver Training Program earn pay while completing classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, dock work, and preparing for their Class A CDL.
Not always. Candidates interested in the Old Dominion Truck Driver Training Program may qualify to earn their CDL through the company. Other driving positions require applicants to already possess a valid Class A CDL.

Yes. Military commercial driving experience may qualify if it was obtained within the past three years. Applicants should provide a DD214 along with documentation verifying qualifying military driving experience.
Most positions require at least 12 months of tractor-trailer driving experience. However, recent graduates of approved truck driving schools and graduates of Old Dominion's Driver Training Program may also qualify.
Daily Work
Pickup & Delivery drivers typically make 15–20 scheduled pickups and deliveries throughout their local service area. They interact directly with customers, safely transport freight, complete required documentation, and return home at the end of the day.
Line Haul drivers transport freight between Old Dominion service centers across regional or interstate routes. They spend more time driving highways than making customer stops and often work predictable routes.
Pickup & Delivery drivers interact with customers daily during pickups and deliveries. Line Haul drivers generally have fewer customer interactions since they primarily transport freight between terminals.
